For a long time, I’ve always wanted to run in a race. I didn’t know when but I wanted to run for a cause. I actually enjoy running since it’s like a stress reducer. One thing that was holding me back was the training – physical and mental. I was also intimidated by my speed. Every time I would run, especially with other people, I would feel like a fat kid chasing an ice cream truck uphill. Yeah, I just used that illustration….I know you are wondering that a woman my size could run for day (looks can be deceiving lol). This is why I workout, note my early post “What not do say to a ‘skinny’ person”.
At first I decided to do the Color Run 5k with a couple of friends, but that turned into a bust. Eventually, one of the clubs and organizations at my university (Andrews Filipino International Association) hosted a Rice Run 5k. I decided that I would give it a try since I didn’t do the Color Run and plus I have friends who will be running as well.
What I had been doing a little before the 5k was of course training. I am super thankful for the C25K (couch to 5k) and Runtastic app on my iPhone.
The C25K app has helped me to build up my endurance. It is an 8 week workout program that only allows you to train 3 days a week. It has me do a brisk 5 minute walk for warm ups and then I would do walk/jog repetitions for about a minute and 30 seconds each and I would eventually run/walk for 3 minutes and followed by a 5 minute cool down. It will alert me when to walk and run and when I’m halfway in my training. I can play my music while using this app.
Runtastic is a great app as well, I normally use it while doing the C25K app so I can track my distance. It also compares my previous runs with the current run. It’s also good for other activities like climbing, cycling, walking, etc.
Now the day of the run I had a couple of feelings, I was excited to run because it was my first 5k yet nervous because I didn’t train as much as I wanted to before the run.
In the beginning of the race, I was running then that run turned into a jog and that jog turned into a power walk. It was crazy! Mind you, the weather was chilly and windy plus I had to run through some sand since I was by Silver Beach and that breeze nearly took me out. I felt like I couldn’t breathe because of the beach breeze. I had my C25K app to help me with my intervals of running and walking and of course my music to keep me going. I was so surprised to see myself jogging they way that I did. By the time I made it to the finish line, I was super proud of myself. I kept saying “Finish Strong” at the last mile marker. The good part was that I was not the last person to finish and I was able to finish in less than 45 minutes, 44:51 minutes. This was great for me running for the first time ever. I felt that if the weather was friendlier with no sand, I would have finished in a half and hour.
It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to running more often now
Feel free to comment below about your first 5K and I would love to hear about your pre-run training rituals, apps, diet, anything that help you with your running activities.
